Amber and Markus: engaged in Wichita

They’re friendly, fun, gorgeous, and comfortable in front of the camera. This makes for a fantastic engagement session, and a fun night for me!
Markus met Amber just days after he initially moved to Wichita. How’s that for fate? They’re planning a wedding in Derby later on this year.

Engagement session photograph at airport with plane

Markus had seen Audra and Nathanael’s engagement photos from the Lawrence airport last summer, and he wanted to shoot at an airport as well. Like Nathanael, Markus is a pilot.

Lawrence, Kansas wedding: Taylor and Jacob

It all started in an ordinary journalism class at an ordinary university in Kansas. A boy and a girl became friends, and though they didn’t know it at the time, their lives would never be the same again. Their paths crossed again two years later while out with friends, and a glass of wine at Bambino’s marked the beginning of a great friendship.
Their friendship grew as time went on. She adored his warm and sincere heart; her laugh made him smile. And so they fell in love.

Taylor and Jacob are no ordinary couple, and their wedding day was a brilliant reflection of that fact. Appropriately enough, they began the rest of their lives right there where it all started in Lawrence, KS at The University of Kansas.

Meanwhile…the guys decided to have some fun at the bowling alley.

I love LOVE when couples choose to see each other before the wedding! It’s always one of the happiest, most memorable moments of the day.

While Lawrence has no shortage of beautiful wedding venues, Danforth Chapel on the University of Kansas campus is one of my favorites. Its size was just perfect for Taylor and Jacob’s intimate, emotional ceremony.

The Eldridge is the perfect place for a wedding reception in Lawrence. The staff there takes very good care of everyone, and the building is just gorgeous!

Taylor and Jacob opted for wedding ice cream instead of cake. I can vouch for Taylor’s reaction; it was good!

Why yes, that IS the entire wedding party indulging in a tribute to the awesomeness that is KU. It’s more common than you’d think; I’ve shot three weddings in the past year that had the alma mater and Rock Chalk played at the reception!

Oh, and one last photo for this post… Yup, that is definitely Sherron Collins’ signature on their wedding program! You’ll have to ask Taylor and Jacob about this one. It’s a good story.

Lawrence, Kansas: photographs

I just got home tonight from Lawrence, where I had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful wedding at Danforth Chapel on the KU campus. Taylor and Jacob held their reception at The Eldridge Hotel, which is by far one of my favorite wedding venues in Lawrence. I can’t say enough about how great the staff is to work with! They really make the entire experience so wonderful for the bride and groom, their guests, and even for me as their photographer. And the fact that their rooms are beautiful and super comfortable just completes the amazing Eldridge experience!

One of the coolest things about The Eldridge (and about Lawrence!) is its history. Though it was originally built in 1855 as The Free State Hotel, the building was burned down just a year later by pro-slavery invaders. The hotel was rebuilt with an extra floor, and they swore to build yet another floor each time the hotel was destroyed in the future.
Well, in 1863 William Quantrill rode into town from that crazy pro-slavery state to the east of us and burned our beautiful Lawrence to the ground. The hotel was rebuilt again and named after its rebuilder, Colonel Eldridge. The hotel’s seal and motto, “from ashes to immortality,” attest to Lawrencians’ determination to stand and fight for the rights and dignity of people everywhere.

How can you not love Lawrence?! What a cool place. Though the hotel has since been closed, reopened, rebuilt, and renovated several times, it retains its architectural grandeur. It’s really a beautiful building! I had the opportunity to make a few images of some of its details while Taylor and Jacob’s guests were in the ballroom, happily dancing the night away.

I love how on this last one, you can see each of the years that the hotel was built.
